- The Trenton Golden Hawks are sitting in top spot of Group A at the 2025 Centennial Cup after a big rebound win on Monday.
Blainville, Quebec’s David Fournier scored twice to propel the Hawks to a 5-2 triumph over the Greater Sudbury Cubs to go to 2-1 following an overtime defeat in Game 2 against the Kam River Fighting Walleye.
Trenton salted away the win in the third period with three unanswered tallies to break open a tie game against the pesky Northern Ontario Junior League champions.
Fournier, the top scorer in the regular season for the Hawks, beat Cubs goalie Karsen Chartier short-side for his first of the tournament at 12:33 of the first from Taeo Artichuk and Joey Brehmer.
After Alexander Vallade tied the game, Fournier broke the deadlock in the dying seconds thanks to the hustle of Corbin Roach and Artichuk, who tag-teamed a Greater Sudbury defenceman on a forecheck and allowed the puck to come to Fournier for a shot over Chartier’s shoulder to re-establish Trenton’s lead.
Lincoln Moore registered the lone goal of the second with eight-and-a-half minutes left in a dominant frame where the Cubs outshot the Hawks 13-4 before Trenton’s big finish.
Aaron Brown (second of the tournament) and Jonathan Pylypuik (first) buried goals within 11 seconds early in the final frame to chase Chartier from the net and Thomas Kuipers rounded out the scoring with his first on Noah Beaulne
Along with Fournier, Artichuk, Roach and Brehmer all registered a pair of points, with Cooper Matthews and Spencer Hughes added single helpers.
Fournier told InQuinte.ca after the game there was no discouragement in the dressing room going into the third.
“We tried not to focus on the score and if we were going shift by shift and getting back to our game, we knew good things would happen,” he said.
“We got back into our game, got those three goals, and the rest was good for ourselves.”
The third-year Hawks forward said the two-day break over the weekend helped the team to recharge during a short tournament.
“Guys are playing banged up, so as soon as we get two days off, it kind of helps the body and helps the mind to get away from the rink a little bit and refocus and get ready for the next game,” Fournier noted.
The shots finished dead even at 28 and goaltender Ryan Sanborn posted his second win of the tournament with 26 saves.
Trenton finishes its round robin schedule with another 6 p.m. EST matchup versus the AJHL representatives, the Grande Prairie Storm, who are 1-1 on the Centennial Cup.
